“The designer must sharpen his focus if he wants to generate heat on the runway again.”
“I CREATE CLOTHES FOR WOMEN WHO ARE NOT ONLY FIERCELY FASHIONABLE BUT ALSO OWN THEIR POWER AND FEMININITY.”
Jason Wu is a leading global design talent based in New York, NY. Through merging classic American sportswear elements with a sophisticated global attitude he has created timeless classics with glamorous sensibility and a distinctively feminine aesthetic.
Since debuting his Ready-to-Wear collection in 2007, Jason has been dedicated to making clothes that are beautifully crafted from the inside out. With a focus on couture quality craftsmanship, over 90% of the Jason Wu Collection is manufactured in New York City’s Garment District.
Jason Wu is an insanely busy fashion designer. Constantly on the go, the designer understands the need for practical pieces that you can easily pack and take everywhere with you. He designed the Grey Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2018 collection with his travel needs in mind. Grey Jason Wu is Jason Wu’s sister label launched to serve a bigger audience. The label offers lower price tags compared to Jason Wu, but the same exceptional quality.
The latest collection in an ode to nomadic women. These ladies need comfortable clothing pieces. And of course low-maintenance ones. That’s why Jason Wu played with men’s cuts tweaking them to fit his feminine aesthetic. For Pre-Fall 2018 he introduced an array of wide-leg trousers, some of them combined with matching blazer. These pieces are a peak of comfort and fashion – something that’s essential to busy ladies who travel a lot.
Jason Wu is never bold or crazy about details. But that doesn’t mean that his designs aren’t adventurous. He likes to play with cuts and silhouettes instead. In the Pre-Fall 2018 lineup for Grey Jason Wu, there are trench coats with separation in the middle that makes them look like a short jacket. Furthermore, there are dresses with draped details or unexpected addition of another fabric that add dimension to the pieces. It’s all about being interesting to the eye while keeping things toned-down and classy.
Forget about logomania and excessive details. The Grey Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2018 collection consists of sophisticated pieces that any woman can find a way to incorporate into her style. Jason Wu wants you to dress with ease. Classy pieces in neutral shades with an occasional pop of color and print are all over the Pre-Fall 2018 collection. Vintage florals and subtle stripes were the patterns of choice this time. Classy, elegant and never passé, these prints added just enough life to the collection. Jason Wu also introduced knitwear pieces that looked very luxury.
Jason Wu knows how to dress all kinds of women. Among his customers, you’ll find businesswomen, celebrities, and even the former first lady Michele Obama who wore his designs for important events. He is one of the few designers that can connect with different women regardless their professional and personal backgrounds. Being beyond the latest trends pays off in Jason Wu’s case. At the end of the day, every woman wants to keep timeless pieces in her wardrobe.
Jason Wu introduces his first fragrance that captures the refined glamour of the sophisticated Jason Wu woman. The freshly alluring scent shimmers during the day and evolves into a deep peppery note that is sensual and seductive.
“the heart of my collection will always be the craftsmanship; everything starts from my obsession for details.”
THE FRAGRANCE
In collaboration with renowned master perfumer Frank Voelkl of Firmenich, Jason captures a sense of nostalgia with the strong presence of Jasmine Sambac. It brought Jason back to his childhood in Taiwan where he used to pick the flower from his neighbor’s stone wall.
The fragrance is fresh, floral, and woody. The top note of Pink Pepper and Fig adds movement and vibrancy while the base note of Silky Musk adds texture. Jasmine Sambac, the key ingredient of this fragrance, is of the highest quality of floral extracts in perfumery—it is handpicked in India at only a select period of time to tap into its full vibrancy.
For the design of the bottle, Jason partnered with architect Andre Mellone. The bottle’s simplicity of form is inspired by mid-century design, Jason’s favorite period, along with his favorite modern artists such as Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly. Designed with an architectural approach, a signature gold cap and seamless thick glass base gives a luxurious weight and feel. To balance the masculine base, the fragrance is nude with a touch of blush, inspired by a 1950’s pressed powder compact, which embodies femininity and sensuality. Mirroring the scent, the packaging, designed by Fabien Baron, is elegantly modern in the same hue.

Although only 35, the precocious designer has already achieved many of his aspirations. His collection is sold globally and he dresses some of the most influential women in the world including First Lady Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon, Julianne Moore, Diane Kruger, Kerry Washington and Christy Turlington, among many others.
“Jason has been such an extraordinary partner. I’ve worn Jason on so many historic occasions: inaugural balls, Barack’s final speech as President, and my last moments as First Lady in January. Under the intense scrutiny of the brightest spotlight imaginable, I felt confident, beautiful and comfortable in my own skin when wearing Jason’s clothes. Jason has an impeccable attention to fit and detail and a unique understanding of how women want to dress and feel in their clothing. I’m so proud of him and so grateful to have had the chance to work with him.” – Michelle Obama
Jason has received many accolades, including being named one of the finalists in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in July 2008. In June 2010 he won the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the CFDA Fashion Awards and in April 2011 he was nominated for the CFDA/Swarovski Award for Accessory Design. Jason was appointed Artistic Director of Hugo Boss womenswear Ready to Wear and Accessory collection in June 2013. More recently, Jason was honored with the Fashion Star Award at The Fashion Group International Night of Stars 2015, and won the 2016 International Designer of Year at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards.
The Jason Wu Collection was established with a commitment to making beautifully crafted clothes with a modern sophistication. Jason has always been driven by a curiosity to learn about construction, workmanship and perfecting every detail of his designs. “My philosophy has always been to build a garment from the inside out,” explains Jason.
As a child he began using dolls as mannequins to learn how to sew after his mother bought him his ‑first sewing machine. The small nature of the mannequins taught him to ‑be in tune with every minute detail of his designs.
Today, he continues on the same path, striving for perfection in his collection where he must start working 5-6 months in advance of their presentation. Over 90% of his fabrics are produced in Italy and France, most of which are designed for and exclusive to Jason. Each season he creates unique prints based on the inspiration of the season and frequently explores new and innovative ways of printing them onto fabric. As the entire accessory collection is produced in Italy, he begins the process by creating custom hardware, heels and working closely with the tanneries to develop unique designs.
In June 2016, Jason Wu is expanding with the arrival of GREY Jason Wu, a sister brand that is inherently connected to the mainline. GREY Jason Wu shares the femininity from the Jason Wu collection but with a more relaxed attitude. Named after his favorite color, Jason wanted to create a collection with chic silhouettes and playful graphics representative of his personality.
His many intricate embellishments take up to 5 months to create. The signature feather details are created at Lemarie in Paris and can take several months to custom dye and burnout, which adds lightness to the garments. For embroidered pieces, custom sequins are often created and hand-applied onto garments, sometimes taking up to 1000 hours. By using old world couture techniques with a modern eye, he is able to create singular designs that are distinctly Jason Wu.
